Cherilu Regina Akers

June 1, 1948 — May 8, 2023

Cheri Akers
Edinburg, Texas
(formerly of Mason, Michigan)

Born Cherilu Regina Ruest to parents Margaret (Peg) and Lucien Ruest, June 1, 1948, in Gary, Indiana.  Passed May 8 , 2023 in McAllen, Texas.  Cheri is the oldest of five siblings and leaves behind sisters Michelle White, Cindy Fournier and brother Jeff Ruest, many nieces, nephews and beloved cousins.  She is now reunited with her parents and brother, Randy Ruest.

Cheri was a 1966 graduate of Dansville High School and attended Lansing Community College.  She married Russ Akers in 1967 and he survives her.  Cheri and Russ had 55 plus years of adventures together including camping, hiking, motorcycling cross-country, exploring many of our national parks and attending numerous Olympic events held in North America over the past decades.  Cheri and Russ sold their country home outside of Mason, Michigan and became full-time residents of Texas in 2016.

Cheri was a multi-faceted soul who excelled in many activities including women's and senior women's championship softball teams, traveling around the United States.  She also joined a senior softball league as a winter Texan beginning around 2004.  She was self-taught in landscaping, construction, remodeling and furniture building, having won an award in Texas the summer of 2022 for a table she hand built from native wood.

A pact was made between Cheri and a sibling wherein it was agreed once all the family is reunited we will first take a morning horseback ride around the Fields Road, Hayhoe Road, Walker Road M36 block as we did so many times in our youth.  After lunch our neighbors will join us for a backyard softball game with all our parents and beloved animals cheering us on.  After supper our neighbors will join us once again for an exciting game of kick-the-can after dark.  A handshake a few weeks ago seal this pact.

Cheri, your family and friends will see you later on for that perfect, youthful summer day.  Shine on, wife, sister, cousin and friend.
